Designed Luck · Stephanie Timm, PhD

The biggest things in life rarely arrive on command.

You can start conversations, apply for roles, and make plans. What you cannot control is which conversation becomes a lasting friendship, which role becomes meaningful work, or which ordinary exchange changes your life. Designed Luck shows you where to look: the environments you enter, the people you stay connected to, and the practices that help you notice and act when something useful appears.

For the parts of life that cannot be forced — friendship, meaningful work, timing, opportunity, a conversation that changes what happens next — the strategy is not waiting. It is doing the work that makes useful contact more likely.

How to Put Yourself Where Good Things Happen

The book

A practical guide to creating better conditions.

Designed Luck starts with a problem most people recognize: the things we want most often do not arrive because we chased them directly.

You can work hard and still be too hidden, too isolated, too busy, or too far from the people and settings where good things tend to happen.

The book is practical without pretending life is fair, predictable, or fully under your control. The goal is not to guarantee outcomes. It is to notice where your setup has gotten too narrow—and where one small shift could improve the odds.

Use it to look at your home, calendar, routines, relationships, work, invitations, and the signals you send into the world.

Common questions

What does it mean to design luck?

Can luck really be designed?

Not completely. You cannot design the chance itself. You can work on the conditions around it: where you spend time, who can think of you, and how ready you are to respond.

Is this manifestation?

No. Designed Luck is not about wishing harder or pretending outcomes are fully controllable. It is about small, practical shifts that increase contact with useful people, ideas, conversations, and opportunities.
